By now, more than half the world’s population is familiar with what a diamond is and how tough the element really is, however very few of us actually knows how a diamond is cut and shined before its placed under a spot light at a jewelry shop. Currently there are three types of diamonds that are available for you to purchase, natural diamonds, synthetic diamonds and imitation elements that resembles to a diamond. Synthetic diamonds aren’t fake diamonds at all. Synthetic diamonds are made from the same material, except that its process was man-made and assisted by advanced technologies. Imitation diamonds are fake diamonds that are commonly made from plain glass.
A natural diamond looks very rough, unclear and is commonly covered in dirt and grime. Processing a natural diamond from a mine is painstaking and difficult. In order to cut a diamond, there are some processes required for the cutter to know about it, he or she must have knowledge and experience prior to plotting and cutting the diamond-rough. In order to slice a diamond rough into shape, there are special tools made specifically to cut through the diamond material.
The Cutting Process
So before a diamond even considered to be cut, the very first thing is decided and understood is the final shape of the diamond. Since the diamond element is one of the hardest elements found on earth, it can only be cut with another diamond element. Commonly the cutting process is divided into 5 stages;
- Planning/ Plotting
Planning or plotting is the process of determining the best shape that the diamond can obtain, without falling in the way of blemishes and other impurities. Most diamond cutting professionals uses a Sarin machine. The Sarin machine uses geometric and mathematical computation to opt out the best dimensions that a diamond rough can obtain.
Next the diamond rough is splited into two halves through mechanical saws and laser cutters. It is then rounded or turned from friction with another diamond.
Diamond Grinders are made from diamonds. All rough edges and dull-chipped sides are grinded until they are smooth and free from any rough or any unwanted flaw.
Finally, the diamond is then polished until the gem becomes brilliantly shiny and smooth, ready to be viewed one last time.
- Final Inspection
The final inspection is conducted with a diamond loupe glass. Diamond loupe glass can range from 20x – 60x magnification ability. During the final inspection, inspectors are looking for the cuts, clarity, color, contrast and of course the carat, before a value is determined.
